Antero Reservoir

Map:
Description:

Antero is derived from the Spanish word "first," as it was the first dam on the South Platte River near the river's origin and first in storage capacity (at the time of construction). Antero Dam is a earth-fill dam built in 1909. Geologists believe the reservoir occupies the site of a former lakebed, probably no more than 300 years old. Green Lake lies submerged within Antero Reservoir.

On July 17, 2007 Antero was re-opened to the delight of many Colorado fishermen. The fish grow fast in this lake, so anglers should find terrific catches from the onset, only to get better as time passes. The Colorado Division of Wildlife has re-stocked the lake with rainbow trout, brook trout, cutbows, cutthroat trout, brown trout, and splake.

Near the beginning of the 2002 drought, the water in Antero Reservoir was used or released to other storage because the large surface area of the reservoir, combined with its lack of depth, made it vulnerable to evaporation. At the end of August, 2002, the Division of Wildlife removed 10,000 trout from the reservoir and Antero was closed to public use.

Fishing Tips, Tactics, How-To info:

Antero Reservoir is open to the public but is experiencing low dissolved oxygen and high hydrogen sulfide levels which are threatening a winter-kill. After ice off we will survey the fish population to determine the extent of a winter-kill if any and adjust stocking schedules if necessary. Rarely does a winter-kill at Antero kill off all of the fish in the reservoir. If a winter- kill does not occur expect high catch rates of large rainbows, cutthroats, and brown trout with brook trout and splake in the 14-18” range.

Directions to Lake:
